GENE LOVES JEZEBEL – Discover [40th Anniversary Expanded Edition] (Remastered 2026), MP3+FLAC

GENE LOVES JEZEBEL – Discover (40th Anniversary Expanded Edition) (Remastered 2026)
Originally released in 1986, Discover marked the defining moment in GENE LOVES JEZEBEL’s career.
It was the album that introduced the Aston brothers’ band to a much wider international audience, successfully blending their gothic origins with a more melodic, guitar-driven sound that would become their signature during the second half of the decade.
To celebrate the album’s 40th anniversary, Beggars Banquet Records has issued a newly expanded edition featuring a fresh remaster, revised artwork, and a valuable bonus recording. Alongside the original studio album comes “Glad To Be Alive,” a live performance captured at Rock City in Nottingham during the band’s 1986 tour, offering a powerful snapshot of Gene Loves Jezebel at the height of their early success. The concert recording perfectly complements the polished studio material with a more energetic and spontaneous performance.
The original album has been newly remastered by Henry Rudkins at AIR Studios, bringing greater clarity and depth while preserving the warm analog character of the original recordings. The updated presentation makes this anniversary edition the definitive version of one of the band’s most important releases.
Discover remains a fascinating blend of styles. While the album clearly embraces the larger, arena-ready production that dominated the mid-1980s, it never abandons the atmospheric post-punk and gothic textures that had defined the group’s earlier work. This unique combination helped Gene Loves Jezebel stand apart from many of their contemporaries.
The album’s best-known track, “Desire,” became the band’s breakthrough anthem. Built around infectious guitar riffs, dramatic vocals, and an instantly memorable chorus, the song perfectly captured the group’s transition toward a more accessible melodic rock sound without sacrificing their distinctive identity. Different editions of the original release featured alternate versions of the track, reflecting the lineup change that brought guitarist James Stevenson into the band.
Stevenson’s arrival proved to be a turning point. Coming from a stronger hard rock background before later joining The Cult, he injected the music with sharper guitar work and a broader melodic approach. His playing expanded the band’s sound while still respecting the darker atmosphere established during their earlier gothic period.
The recording sessions themselves were far from straightforward. Producer Gary Lyons was forced to leave the project after suffering a heart attack, leaving engineer Mike Dearnley to complete the album. Despite those unexpected circumstances, the finished record feels remarkably cohesive, balancing shimmering production with powerful guitars and emotional songwriting.
Stevenson’s contributions shine throughout the album, alternating between bright melodic hooks and darker, moodier textures. Songs such as “A White Horse” reveal the band’s lingering gothic influences, while the heavier guitar arrangements point toward the more rock-oriented direction they would continue to explore.
Among the album’s finest moments is “Beyond Doubt,” an atmospheric composition that evolved from an earlier instrumental piece. Delicate guitar melodies, haunting vocals, and beautifully layered harmonies create one of the most emotionally powerful performances on the record. In contrast, energetic tracks like “Heartache,” “Sweetest Thing,” and “Desire” provide some of the album’s most immediate and memorable rock moments.
The accompanying live recording from Rock City, Nottingham, captures the band in outstanding form during the original Discover tour. The performances are raw, energetic, and full of youthful confidence, highlighting just how exciting Gene Loves Jezebel had become as a live act during this period.
Four decades later, Discover remains one of the standout releases of the mid-’80s alternative rock scene—a record where gothic atmosphere, melodic pop, post-punk textures, and arena rock coexist naturally. This expanded anniversary edition finally gives the album the presentation it has long deserved.
Highly Recommended.
