Steven Wilson – The Overview 2025

Coming Soon

Steven Wilson will release his eighth studio album, The Overview, in March. The two-track, 42-minute album is inspired by the “overview effect” experienced by astronauts looking back at the Earth from space and sees Wilson return to expansive, progressive music, a genre he helped redefine and repopularise with both his solo and Porcupine Tree releases.

The two lengthy, ambitious tracks are each made up of distinctive musical sections that flow from one to the other, playing out as unique and continuous pieces incorporating everything from glistening electronics to post-rock and beyond. The album also features a set of lyrics by XTC’s Andy Partridge that help drive the story in ‘Objects Outlive Us. SDE was lucky enough to hear the whole album in Dolby Atmos last November at a special preview event in North London and it sounded ambitious and very impressive. In terms of formats, the album is available on CD, standalone blu-ray (with Atmos, 5.1, hi-res stereo and instrumentals), various coloured vinyl (the pick of which is probably the mint green version) and as a 2CD+blu-ray deluxe edition (in 96-page book packaging) which offers a bonus CD featuring 60 minutes of music (called The Alterview) not included on the final album and an specially commissioned orchestral version of the 23 minute long ‘Objects Outlive Us’ (called ‘Orchestral Objects’). The blu-ray in the deluxe is different to the standalone version since it adds The Alterview in hi-res stereo (only) and ‘Orchestral Objects’ in 5.1 and Atmos. The Overview will be released on 14 March 2025 via Fiction Records.
