While many bands overcame setbacks on the road to fame, the Dolls seemed destined to battle misfortune at every turn.

Despite becoming one of the most influential acts in both glam rock and punk, they never enjoyed the commercial success their impact deserved. Their fearless image, raw energy, and rebellious spirit inspired generations of musicians, while Johnny Thunders later helped shape the look and attitude of the British punk explosion through the Heartbreakers. The Dolls became icons not through chart success, but through the lasting power of their influence.

Their troubles began almost immediately. Original drummer Billy Murcia died during the band’s first trip to England before they had even secured a major recording contract. Soon afterward, producer Todd Rundgren was chosen to helm their self-titled 1973 debut, an unlikely partnership that nevertheless produced one of rock’s defining albums. Critics embraced it, but record buyers largely ignored it. The follow-up, Too Much Too Soon, mixed leftover material, unexpected cover versions, and recycled ideas into another critically respected but commercially disappointing release.

By 1975, internal tensions had reached a breaking point. Drug problems, declining audiences, and constant instability pushed the group toward collapse. Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan, and Arthur Kane were drifting apart from the rest of the band, while manager Malcolm McLaren struggled to keep the operation afloat with increasingly chaotic tours. Eventually, Thunders and Nolan departed to form the Heartbreakers, a band that would become hugely influential within the emerging punk movement. Future W.A.S.P. founder Blackie Lawless briefly joined the Dolls to help fulfill remaining live commitments before he and Kane relocated to the West Coast. Mercury Records soon dropped the band, and with only David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain remaining, the New York Dolls appeared to bring their remarkable first chapter to a close with what was believed to be their final performance at Max’s Kansas City on December 30, 1976. Or so everyone thought.

Track List:
01. We’re All In Love
02. Runnin’ Around
03. Plenty of Music
04. Dance Like A Monkey
05.
